BUMPS ALL MOUNTAIN SKIING

This section will give you the confidence to tackle those nasty bumps front on.......... after reading this they'll be no need to go around the sides and miss out the moguls! Above all be positive, get stuck in and have a go.

Skiing uneven terrain while staying in control and balanced while maintaining constant contact with the ground.

Line - where shall I go? Around, over, through or under.....

Method 1: Initially use the bumps to help you turn (they are your friends), go onto the top of the bump, pivot your feet and side slip of the otherside. Then proceed forward across a few bumps and pick another friendly looking bump to repeat. Once you've gained some confidence reduce the width you go across from 3/4 bumps down to 1/2.

Method 2: To ski the bumps faster and more direct. Start to ski more in the hollows and begin to use the bumps as terrain to help slow you down. Keep looking to point the ski's down the hill (not across) into the bump - at the moment of impact bend/soften your legs ankles/knees quickly and your body will slow down - you can also use a check and powerful pole plant as you hit the bump (see middle picture above).

REMEMBER:

  • Maintain a strong upper body and arm carriage
  • Be softer underneath in your lower body, legs to react and absorb the bumps
  • Use a good strong pole plant to help stabilise your upper body when turning
