STEEPS ALL MOUNTAIN SKIING
This section is all about giving you better tactics and technique for handling those steep nasty bits that we all come across from time to time. It doesn't matter whether you're a nervous intermediate skier faced with a steep red run, or an a more experienced skier looking to learn to ski couloirs, the similar principles apply. Read on to discover more....
In steep terrain controlling your speed is the most important thing. Parallel skidded stops (hockey stops) are a great way to practice learning how to slow down or stop when you need to keep your speed right under control. Key focus - turn your feet without using your upper body and you'll keep better balance.
Practice skiing within one piste machine track on any run you feel is within your comfort zone - remember the most important thing is not to gain speed! If this becomes easy then simply look for a steeper slope and keep on practacing.
Make sure you get a good strong grip/support underneath your feet by softening or bending your ankles, knees and hips during each hockey stop. To make this movement powerful imagine you are spraying lots of snow every time you make a turn/check.
Use a good strong pole plant to help stabilise your upper body when turning. Key focus - plant the pole firmly and at the same time as when the ski's check. This could be seen as planting at the end of the turn.
